[Editorial] New avenues for epilepsy treatment

As the epilepsy community prepares to converge on London, UK, for the 10th European Congress on Epileptology, there has never been a more buoyant time for the field. In the past few years, there has been a flurry of activity to produce initiatives that assess the needs of and improve the care and support for people with epilepsy. Over the past two decades, many drugs that ameliorate seizure control and associated comorbidities have come to market. However, despite this increase in the pharmacological options available, there are substantial unmet clinical needs: up to 30% of people with epilepsy will fail to have their seizures controlled by current drugs; for many others, adverse effects or contraindications will make these drugs an untenable option.
